Garstang

Sandy Bay local town Garstang

Garstang is an ancient market town, featuring in the doomsday book. This attractive town is a past winner of the Britain in Bloom award for small town. Famous for being the first ever ‘Fairtrade Town’. The traditional weekly market, dating back to the 1300’s, is held on a Thursday along the High Street. There is a great variety of quality independent shops offering a wide selection of goods. After a meander through the shops there is an abundance of pubs and cafes to choose from. Garstang is also the home of the nearest larger supermarkets; Booths, Sainsbury’s and Aldi.

Garstang hosts a range of fantastic events throughout the year. There is a local Agricultural Show, an ice cream festival, a scarecrow festival and a local Arts & Music Festival. The Victorian Christmas Festival is always popular and a great start to the Festive period.

There are some beautiful walks around Garstang along the canal or River Wyre and further out into the surrounding countryside. It is worth popping into the Local Tourist Information Centre in Garstang town centre where handy leaflets provide maps of local walks with interesting local facts along the route.

A beautiful location for a picnic is Garstang’s Millennium Green. Tucked just behind the High Street, there is a picnic area, and sculptures for everyone to enjoy. Why not try the 30 minute walk around the green, which takes you alongside the river and try to spot some local wildlife.
