Blackpool’s Theatreland: A Stage by the Sea.

The bright lights of Blackpool are 11 miles away from Sandy Bay, and it’s theatres offer some amazing shows.
Blackpool isn’t just Britain’s favourite seaside playground, it’s also a stage where glitter, drama, and history take the spotlight. The resort’s Theatreland blends grand Victorian venues with modern performance spaces, creating a cultural quarter that rivals cities many times its size.

At the heart of it all stands the Winter Gardens, an entertainment complex first opened in 1878. Its ornate theatres, the Opera House, Pavilion, and Empress Ballroom, have hosted legends from Frank Sinatra to Shirley Bassey. Today, the Opera House remains a must-visit for touring West End productions, concerts, comedy, and spectacular one-off events like the Rebellion Festival.

All within walking distance

Just a short stroll away, the Grand Theatre is a jewel of Matcham architecture. Nicknamed “the Matcham Masterpiece,” it’s famous for its ornate plasterwork, intimate sightlines, and a warm atmosphere that makes every performance feel personal. The Grand hosts everything from Shakespeare to contemporary dance, pantomimes to stand-up comedy, ensuring variety for every taste.

Blackpool’s theatre scene isn’t confined to tradition. Venues like Viva Blackpool offer modern cabaret, music tributes, and dinner shows in a vibrant, club-style setting. Meanwhile, smaller fringe spaces such as Bootleg Social inject fresh energy with live music, spoken word, and alternative acts.

For visitors, the joy of Blackpool’s Theatreland lies in its proximity to the promenade’s other attractions. You can spend the afternoon exploring the Tower, strolling the beach, or riding the roller coasters at the Pleasure Beach, then dress up for an evening of drama, music, and applause.

Whether you’re drawn by the glamour of the Opera House, the heritage of the Grand, or the buzz of contemporary cabaret, Blackpool’s Theatreland proves that the resort’s lights shine just as brightly indoors as they do along the famous Illuminations.
It’s not just a night out, it’s a tradition, a celebration, and a little bit of seaside magic

The History of Fleetwood

Fleetwood is only a stone’s throw from Sandy Bay. A short walk along the coastal path takes you to the ferry slip, and the regular passenger ferry takes you over to Fleetwood.

Mention Fleetwood and most people will immediately think of a once flourishing fishing port. Although it is still in evidence today it pales into insignificance compared to many years ago when hundreds of boats would come alongside at the docks and land their ‘catch of the day’ for local fish traders to bargain for.

Neve Fleetwood are successfully carrying on the heritage and have been supplying quality seafood to top class eateries in the North West and much further afield since 1984.

At low tide venture to the Fleetwood Marshes to see a group of abandoned fishing boats resting next to the River Wyre. Many photographers visit to take pictures of the melancholy wrecks which are quite a feature when the light is just right.

Some though may think of the world famous throat lozenges ‘Fisherman’s Friend’. The idea of a local pharmacist, James Lofthouse, wanting to help the deep-sea fishermen who often lost their voice after a day out on the high seas. A mixture of liquorice, eucalyptus and menthol in 1865 developed into the lozenger we now know, sold and loved across the globe and even endorsed by the once Queen Elizabeth II. It remains a family business to this day with new lozenge flavours being introduced all the time.

In the early 1900’s the only way to get to the Lake District was to catch a train to Fleetwood and then jump aboard a boat, a famous one was paddle steamer ‘The Lady Moyra’. How the times have changed! Because of this the town became a stopping off point for many travellers and began to flourish. Hence the building of the North Euston Hotel and The Mount Hotel considered very grand in their day, and still impressive today.

There’s so much to discover in Fleetwood and wandering around you will start to wonder what life was like in the ‘Olden Days’!

To learn much more about this fascinating seaside town and surrounding area visit Fleetwood Museum which gives you a wonderful insight into its heritage.
